The Doll's Clothes Hangers were designed for a group of very young children at the start of their symbolic play. The idea for creating these came from teacher's intention to keep the family learning corner tidy. And while the hangers were initially intended for hanging doll's clothes only, children quickly recognized and started to use them for all-type-of-clothes in their play area such as costumes and regular children's dress-up clothes.
At first these small clothes hangers seemed as a too simple even plain downsized item for play but turned out to be a valuable classroom resource. Placed in the learning corner where pretend and role play takes place, hangers became integral and much used toy by children. It is well known that almost any object from everyday life when adjusted to a size that is considered to be 'child's size' will not fail to do the trick and get children interested and engage in play.
Without any obvious attempt to teach children how to place different wardrobe on a clothes hanger within relatively short period of time, was precisely what happened in this particular classroom with 2.5 and 3 year old children. Of course, many of them still could not do it completely on their own but all of them were eager to make the attempt, both in the kindergarten and at home.
Resources as simple as this one can easily be overlooked as a learning tool in the classroom. The small size of the clothes hangers is what makes them so popular among children. They help keep play area tidy and they simply make sense in the learning corner. But most of all, they provide practice of a basic but important action through play at the early age.
